Things to Enjoy in Sleights, Briggswath and Ruswarp

Sleights is a large village with plenty to do right on our doorstep. The village is well served by our local Spa shop, which is also home to a Post Office. We've also got an excellent butcher, a couple of pubs, a fish and chip restaurant, a garden centre with cafe and more all close at hand.

While Whitby draws big crowds, Sleights, Briggswath and Ruswarp tend to remain fairly quiet and peaceful all year round. The perfect place for a relaxing break in the North Yorkshire countryside.

Here are our recommendations for other businesses to visit while you're staying at Rowan Tree House.

The Salmon Leap

The Salmon Leap is a family run pub located at the bottom of the village. They have a large beer garden to the rear of the property which looks on to the Yorkshire railway steam trains, passing in the summer months. In the winter months they light their wood-burning stove, creating a cosy and welcoming atmosphere in the bar.

Perry's Plants & The River Gardens

Perry's was originally a family house with Victorian Tea Rooms and a tennis court, croquet lawn and a very basic holiday accommodation in the grounds. There's a lovely photograph on the wall in the cafe of Victorian ladies in their gorgeous dresses takin tea and rowing on the river.

The gardens were bought in the 1970's by Pat and the late Bill Perry. It was quite run down at that time with a tea room in the lounge of the house, an old boathouse and caravans and holiday cabins in varying degrees of disrepair. Over the years they improved and developed the site and landscaped the gardens.

The licensed cafe is now in the renovated, old holiday cabins overlooking the river and the Garden Centre has evolved from being Pat's hobby into a nursery specialising in unusual plants.

Still a family business, Pat and Bill's son Richard and his wife Sharon run the Garden Centre and their daughter Jackie runs the cafe.

Ruswarp Pleasure Boats

A little further away in the nearby village of Ruswarp you'll find Ruswarp Pleasure Boats. People have been enjoying boating on the River Esk at Ruswarp for over 100 years! These days you can hire rowing boats or kayaks, and spend a leisurely hour exploring the river. It's a popular activity, especially through the warmer months, and a fantastic way to enjoy some of the beautiful countryside in our local area.

The Bridge Inn

After spending some time 'messing about on the river', why not head round the corner to The Bridge Inn? It's a traditional pub serving heart meals. Recently renovated and under new ownership it's become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. There's a small beer garden to the rear, and it's conveniently located just next door to Ruswarp Railway Station from where, timetables permitting, you'll be able to catch your train back to Sleights!

Jackson's Butchers

Also in the village of Ruswarp you'll find Jackson's Butchers. Jackson's are most well known for their amazing breakfast sandwiches. Choose from sausage, bacon or egg (or a combinatioon). They're generously filled and excellent value. Why not pick one up on your way into Whitby. If you're walking you'll find a footpath just to the right of Jackson's shop which leads across the fields and up to Mayfield Road in Whitby. It's a lovely walk through the summer months.
